Why we index on CAS
A CAS Registry Number identifies a single substance. "Caustic soda", "lye", "sodium hydrate", and "sodium hydroxide" are the same thing — 1310-73-2 — and a purchasing specification written against the number cannot be misread the way a name can.
That matters most at two moments: when you are cross-referencing a competitor quote against ours, and when a regulator or an auditor asks what exactly is on site. Both go faster with a number.
What the number does not tell you
CAS identifies the substance, not the grade, the concentration, or the specification. Technical grade and USP grade sulfuric acid share a registry number and are not interchangeable — the difference is in trace impurities that the number says nothing about.
So use the CAS to confirm you are comparing the same substance, then compare grade, assay, and Certificate of Analysis to confirm you are comparing the same product.
