Why ferric over alum
Ferric works across a broader pH range, performs better in cold water, and is more effective for phosphorus removal. Alum produces a lighter floc and is cheaper. Most plants that switched to ferric did so for a phosphorus limit and kept it for the sludge characteristics.
Handling
It stains permanently — concrete, clothing, equipment, everything. That is cosmetic but universally underestimated; design the unloading area accordingly.
It is corrosive to most metals including stainless steel. Use FRP, HDPE, or lined equipment throughout, including fittings and instrumentation. A stainless valve in an otherwise correct system will fail and it will fail messily.
It freezes around −15 °C. Not usually a Southern California problem, but worth knowing if you ship it elsewhere.
