Thirty-one to thirty-three percent hydrochloric acid, commonly sold as 20 Baumé muriatic acid.
Typical uses
- Steel pickling and scale removal
- Concrete and masonry etching
- Ion exchange regeneration
- pH adjustment where sulfate is undesirable in the discharge
- Well and pipe acidising
Handling
Hydrochloric acid fumes noticeably. The vapour is corrosive and attacks nearby equipment, so storage areas need ventilation and any metal in the vicinity will corrode over time. Fume-tight storage and scrubbed vents are worth the cost.
Use HDPE, FRP, or rubber-lined equipment. Do not use any bare metal — including stainless steel, which is attacked rapidly.
Compatibility
Violently incompatible with bases, and with hypochlorite — which liberates chlorine gas. Keep acid and bleach storage physically separated with their own containment.
