Toxicity — the part people underestimate
Methanol is acutely toxic by ingestion, inhalation, and skin absorption. Metabolism produces formic acid, which causes metabolic acidosis and permanent blindness. Symptoms are frequently delayed by hours, which means an exposed worker can feel fine and still need urgent treatment.
Skin absorption is a genuine exposure route, not a theoretical one. Glove selection matters — many common glove materials are permeated quickly by methanol.
Any suspected exposure warrants immediate medical attention with the safety data sheet in hand. Do not wait for symptoms.
Fire
Flash point around 11 °C (52 °F). Methanol burns with a flame that is nearly invisible in daylight — a fact that has caused serious injuries to people who walked into a fire they could not see. Alcohol-resistant foam is required; water alone will spread it.
