Operating notes
Alum works in a narrower pH band than ferric, roughly 5.5 to 7.5 depending on the water, and it consumes alkalinity as it hydrolyses. In a low-alkalinity source water that means pH drops as dose increases, which caps how much you can add before you need supplemental alkalinity — usually soda ash or caustic.
Cold water performance falls off noticeably. Plants on surface water sources often see their required dose climb in winter for exactly this reason.
Handling
Mildly corrosive rather than aggressively so. Use FRP, HDPE, or 316 stainless. It crystallises in cold weather at this concentration, so unheated outdoor storage in a cold climate needs attention.
