Potassium hydroxide solution at 45%. It behaves much like caustic soda but produces potassium salts rather than sodium salts, which is the deciding factor in most applications that specify it.
Where it is specified over caustic soda
- Liquid detergent and soap manufacture, where potassium soaps stay soluble
- Electroless and electrolytic plating baths requiring potassium chemistry
- Agricultural and fertiliser applications where potassium is wanted in the effluent
- Formulations where sodium would precipitate or cause scaling
Handling
Corrosive to skin and eyes, exothermic on dilution, and incompatible with acids, aluminium, and zinc — the same precautions as caustic soda apply. It stays liquid at lower temperatures than 50% caustic soda, which is occasionally the reason it is chosen.
