Typical uses

  • Passivation of stainless steel per ASTM A967 and AMS 2700
  • Bright dipping and chemical polishing of copper and brass
  • Etching in electronics and printing
  • Stripping of certain plated deposits
  • Analytical and laboratory use, at appropriate grade

Handling — read this one carefully

Nitric acid is both a strong acid and a strong oxidiser, which is a more dangerous combination than either property alone. Contact with organic material — wood, cloth, solvents, even a cardboard pallet soaked with it — can ignite.

Store on non-combustible surfaces with dedicated secondary containment. Do not store on or near wooden pallets. Do not use organic absorbents in a spill kit intended for nitric.

Use 304L or 316L stainless, glass, or PTFE. It attacks most other metals and all common elastomers.

Compatibility

Incompatible with organics, alcohols, acetic acid, reducing agents, and metal powders. Contact with hydrochloric acid produces aqua regia and nitrosyl chloride.

Documents

Safety data sheets and certificates are available to account holders. Request one below and we send it the same business day — or ask us to attach documents to every shipment automatically so you are not requesting them one at a time.

Read the sheet before the first use

Section 2 covers the hazards, Section 8 the protective equipment actually required, and Section 10 what this must not be stored next to. Storage incompatibility is the single most common cause of serious chemical incidents. How to read an SDS
