Alum produces a lighter floc and is cheaper. Most plants that switched to ferric did so for a phosphorus limit and kept it for the sludge characteristics.<\/p>\n<h2>Handling<\/h2>\n<p>It stains permanently \u2014 concrete, clothing, equipment, everything. That is cosmetic but universally underestimated; design the unloading area accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>It is corrosive to most metals including stainless steel. Use FRP, HDPE, or lined equipment throughout, including fittings and instrumentation. A stainless valve in an otherwise correct system will fail and it will fail messily.<\/p>\n<p>It freezes around \u221215&nbsp;\u00b0C.
